Living Waters For The World

Living Waters for the World allows people to see the world through a new set of eyes, and invariably changes them. God empowers people of faith to be agents of change. First Presbyterian Church is committed to supporting Living Waters with Mission Offerings collected in January and June. The money collected supports communities that have available, but contaminated, water. Living Waters has developed water purification systems that filtrate and disinfect the water in communities removing bacteria, chlorine-resistant organisms and other impurities. More clean water means more lives changed and more lives saved. Jesus Christ is Living Water for our bodies and souls.
We ask that the members of this church extend your generous support to the ministry of Living Waters for the World on Sunday, January 6, 2019 with your Mission Offering.

Family Night Family Night

We’ve had a number of fun family night celebrations and have appreciated those of you who were faithful volunteers and attendees. We have decided to take a break from further events given that winter is always an unpredictable and difficult time for people to make evening commitments. Come Spring we will be ready to consider some new ideas for reaching out to our community. Let us know if you have any suggestions!

Per Capita

With the beginning of a new year, it is time to once again pay our per capita to the Presbytery of Lake Michigan. For 2019, the per capita for each active member is $32.20 (General Assembly $8.95, Synod of the Covenant $3.25, Presbytery of Lake Michigan $20). Along with each church’s shared mission pledge, the per capita finances the General Assembly, the Synod of the Covenant and our Lake Michigan Presbytery. For 2019, our total is $2,221.80. This is based on 69 active member as of 12/31/17 and is due January 20, 2019. As in the past, the Budget and Finance Committee is always very appreciative of members paying their own per capita. If you are able to pay your own per capita, please indicate your $32.20 is for your per capita. Thank you.

New Furnaces New Furnaces

At the December 17, 2018 session meeting, the session voted to approve the bid from Wilson Heating, Cooling and Plumbing to replace our four furnaces with three Bryant 915 series 96% efficient 140,000 B.T.U. natural gas furnaces. This does not include the boiler, which heats the east addition to the original church building. The cost is $10,432.00. This includes a warranty for 1 year parts, 2 years labor, 20 year heat exchanger. It also includes the 1st year complimentary maintenance on new equipment. Wilson’s have also agreed to provide labor to maintain the three new furnaces, the existing boiler, and air conditioning system for the first year all complimentary. This service will include two visits yearly with one annual CSD-1 report. Following the complimentary maintenance, they will provide this service for an additional two years at the locked in rate of $475.00 (discounted from the regular price of $650.00). All maintenance material will receive a 15% discount and all repairs for the church will receive a 10-25% discount. With the approval of Orson Coe II and his two sisters, Connie and Brenda, the session also approved the Margaret Coe and Gladys Coe Memorial Fund be used to cover this expense.

Session Highlights

These minutes are of the November 19, 2018 meeting.

The new Transitional Co-Leaders of the Presbytery of Lake Michigan are Rev. Fran Lane-Lawrence and Rev. Cal Bremer. Rev. Lane-Lawrence will also continue as the Stated Clerk of our presbytery.

Rev. Clayton Bailey, First Lutheran Church, Tiffin, Ohio, has granted the Letter of Transfer for Lewis and Carol Campbell, who are transferring their membership to our church. During the worship service on November 25th, they will be received into membership.

The Celebration of the Saints form was submitted on-line to the Presbytery of Lake Michigan listing Elder Robert Norman Butler DOD 3/15/18. Names to be submitted are elders, who died from September 30, 2017 through October 1, 2018. For our church, Bob was our only elder, who died during this time period. The names will be read at the December 4th Presbytery meeting.

The new per capita for 2019 is $32.20 per active member (General Assembly $8.95, Synod of the Covenant $3.25, Presbytery of Lake Michigan $20). As of December 31, 2017, we had 69 active members. Our per capita of $2,221.80 is due to the presbytery office January 20, 2019.

The Policy Manual has been updated and reviewed. It is in the cabinet in the pastor’s office.

The 2018 Clerk’s Annual Questionnaire approved at the September session meeting was submitted on-line October 26, 2018 to the Presbytery of Lake Michigan.

Rev. Fran Lane-Lawrence, Stated Clerk of our Presbytery, sent an e-mail October 19, 2018 to the clerks of session and the pastors with an attachment of the Preliminary Report of the Greenwood Administrative Commission to review. The report was available for this session meeting. If anyone wishes to review this report, please contact Margaret Gregory.

Our church’s new e-mail address is

Otis Elevator Company sent an e-mail to the church with an attached work order for the State of Michigan testing that is due on the elevator. They indicated they complete this test every 3 years to satisfy State code for our property. A motion was made and seconded to approve this test and the cost of $1,450.00.

A motion was made and seconded that we pledge $250 for our church’s shared mission giving. The shared mission giving and per capita from each church comprise the 2019 budget for our presbytery.

Each year presbytery requires each church to review their property and liability insurance. Dr. Keith Sterner said he would contact Mike Kirgis, who is an insurance agent, to review the policy. We are insured with Hastings Mutual and our local agent is Carr Agency. The individuals handling cash/checks are not bonded.

Session approved our church participation in the annual Christmas Advent Walk on December 9th.

Dan Peterson from EightCap contacted our church because they are looking for a facility for the two Ionia Head Start classes to meet for one year. Our church was mentioned because of our mission with the Head Start program. Session was in agreement for EightCap to do a walk through of our facility. That will be scheduled.

Dr. Warren Thompson, Co-Chair of the Building and Grounds Committee, reported Otis Elevator needs to complete a 3 year inspection. He also stated the call button on the third level is not working. In the past two weeks, Rick Steele has worked on the boiler on two separate occasions and replaced a part. The boiler is 49 years old. He also had to work on one of the forced air furnaces, and the other one is leaking water. He is recommending they may need to be replaced. They are 25 years old. Dr. Warren Thompson is recommending we get three estimates-Home Experts, Wilson Heating and Cooling and O’Mara Heating. Warren will obtain the estimates and report back to session at the next meeting.

For the Stewardship report, Lee Hunsberger reported as of November 18, 10 pledges had been received totaling $31,580.00, 5 people indicated they would give as they were able, which last year totaled $2,145.00, and 20 forms were not returned. Of those 20, last year they gave $20,700.00. These amounts come to a total of $54,425.00.

A motion was made and seconded to pay Dr. Chris Dorn $200 per Sunday plus mileage. Everyone is in agreement they would like Chris to continue to preach until we can hire a pastor. All were in favor and the motion carried.

Session approve Margaret Gregory as the voting elder at the December 4th Presbytery meeting in Grand Haven.

A motion was made and approved to accept the Letter of Transfer for Lewis and Carol Campbell. Prior to attending the First Lutheran Church in Tiffin, they attended the Presbyterian Church in Tiffin, where they were both long time members and elders. They loved to Ionia to be closer to their daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Jim VanSyckle as well as their grandchildren.

Kathy VanSyckle presented several options for purchasing a new pre-lit Christmas tree that doesn’t take an army to put up and take down. Jan Arnold has offered rummage sale
money to cover the cost. A motion was made and seconded to purchase the Ontario Fir Tree, which is 9’ tall, has a diameter of 68” and has 1200 LED lights. Cost is $599.00. All
were in favor. The motion carried.

A motion was made and seconded to pay the City of Ionia $20 to wrap a lamppost with garland. A tag on the lamppost will indicated our church sponsored it.

The next meeting is December 17, 2019 at 7:00 PM.
