Session Highlights

These minutes are of the July 16, 2018 meeting.

Edgar Harkness died the evening of June 24, 2018 at Green Acres in Ionia. Although he was not a member of First Presbyterian, he has close ties to the church. His wife, Marie, and his two children were raised in the church. He provided the funds to purchase the hand bells in honor of Marie. On June 27th, Dr. Chris Dorn presided at the private graveside service at Balcom Cemetery in Ionia.

As scheduled, Luxury Janitorial and Carpet Cleaning completed the tile stripping and waxing of the floors in the fellowship hall, the table and chairs storage room, bell choir practice room, kitchen and room off the kitchen, upstairs bathrooms, kitchenette, and the carpet cleaning in the high traffic areas of the Memorial Room. The cost of $1,398.51 was paid from the building and maintenance fund.

Rev. Helen Havlik, Session moderator, provided the Session with a report on the presbytery meeting on June 12th at the First Presbyterian Church in Edwardsburg. Those retiring in the presbytery office were honored. Rev. Dr. John Best, General Presbyter, is retiring at the end of the summer and will be the interim minister at Pine Island Presbyterian Church. Leslie Keusch, Communication Co- ordinator/Office Administrator is retiring August 16th. The presbytery treasurer has retired and his replacement has been hired. There will be on-going talks about the structure of our presbytery.

The church picnic will be at Linda Hood’s campgrounds August 19th immediately following the worship service. The Membership and Care Committee will furnish hamburgers, hot dogs, buns and drinks.

The Personnel Committee will be meeting to establish a vacation policy for our music leader, administrative assistant and custodian.

Memorial and Investment Committee reported Kosbar Scholarships in the amount of $7,000.00 have awarded to five eligible students. Sarah Sykes received her scholarship on Sunday July 9th during the worship service, and on August 12th, Jeremiah Helsius, PJ Folaron, Megan Ransom, and Emily Rozich will receive theirs.

Dr. Chris Dorn referred Rev. Ram Aryal to the Pastor Nominating Committee, and a discussion was held with him. He is from Nepal and has been working with a Nepali-speaking congregation on the east side of Grand Rapids. He is interested in a part-time position. The plan is to schedule him to preach the end of August.

On June 26, 2018, a letter was received from Fowler-Herbert Organ Co. detailing the condition of the organ and the suggested repairs. A copy of the letter was provided to each session member. The pneumatic couplers and switching are beginning to leak as the leather is failing. This can be repaired but at some point it is not cost efficient. We may want to consider a new electronic switching system and refurbish the console once this occurs. The cost is about $40,000 and would last 30-40 years. The pedals need to be rebushed to make them quieter. The cost is $500-$600. The music desk light is inoperable. A new LED light on the console is $500.

An anonymous donor would like to fund hiring Julie Adgate to redesign our church website. Session was agreeable to proceed with this. Several individuals were suggested to work with Julie.

The next meeting is September 17, 2018 at 7:00PM.
