Missions News

Thank you note from RAVE:

Dear Presbyterian friends:
Thank you for thinking of our children here at the shelter. We will definitely find a pair of small arms to hug each of the stuffed animal you donated. RAVE Staff Looking for people that would like to be on a soup kitchen team for 2019 and forward. First Presbyterian is loosing two soup kitchen teams at the end of this year. If you and your friends (don’t have to be from this church) would like to form a team or if you would like to be on a team, please let Marilyn McKay know. Soup kitchen at Zion Church is the third Thursday of the month. The teams rotate each month so our commitment would be 3 or 4 times a year depending on how many teams we have. All food except dessert is provided. Teams just need to cook, serve, and clean up. Teams are usually at the church by 4:30 pm, serve dinner at
6:00 pm, and are usually done by 7:00 pm. We do ask that soup kitchen members bring something to provide dessert for the patrons. We suggest at least 4 members per team, but you can have as many as you like. Maybe a group from your work, gym, knitting group, book club, etc. might be interested. Please pray about this and let Marilyn or any Mission member know if you would like to be a part of this mission feeding the hungry in Ionia.

Please keep your eyes pealed while garage sale shopping for winter coats and or snow pants for the children in the Ionia Headstart program. On a recent trip, we were able to find 10 coats and 5 pairs of snow pants for the kids that show up with no winter coat, hat mittens, or snow pants. All coats we bought were $3.00 or less. They are washed and ready to go when old man winter decides to do his thing!

A pastor and fishing buddy are standing by the side of a road holding up a sign that reads “The end is near! Turn around now before it’s too late!” A passing driver yells, “You guys are nuts!” and speeds past them. From around the curve, they hear screeching tires — then a big splash. The pastor turns to his friend and says, “Do you think we should just put up a sign that says ‘Bridge Out’ instead?”

These minutes are of the May 21, 2018 meeting.

Perry Gregory will co-chair the Building and Grounds Committee with Dr. Warren Thompson. Linda Hood will remain a member of the committee as well as Dr. Keith Sterner, Duane Emlinger, and Jim VanSyckle.

The 2017 Session minutes were reviewed May 5, 2018 at North Kent Presbyterian Church in
Rockford. They were approved without exception.

Rev. Dr. John Best, General Presbyter of the Lake Michigan Presbytery, is retiring this summer.
A Transitional General Presbyter will be hired. Leslie Keusch, Presbytery Communication
Coordinator/Office Administrator is also retiring at the end of the summer.

Rev. Havlik, Session moderator, provided elder training.

The session approved a motion to hire John Purchase of Luxury Janitorial to polish and buff the floors in the kitchen, the room off the kitchen, the dining/fellowship hall, the two rooms off the fellowship hall, the kitchenette and the two upstairs bathrooms for a total cost of $1,273.51 plus $125 to clean the carpet (high traffic areas) in the Memorial Room. The cost to be paid by the church building maintenance fund.

A motion was approved to use the Shaver Children’s Fund to provide camp scholarships to those students, who desire to attend Camp Greenwood or another Christian camp this summer. There are seven interested students. Cost is $420 per student. Approximate cost is $3,000. There is $3,500 in the fund.

The date for the annual church picnic at Linda Hood’s campgrounds is August 19th.

Kosbar Scholarship applications were sent to five eligible students.

Lee Hunsberger reported a successful congregation book and funds collection for the Ionia Head Start students. Sixty books were collected and $350.00 was donated toward the purchase of additional books. Each student will be able to take home two books.

A motion was approved to pay Dr. Chris Dorn $150 per Sunday plus mileage effective May 27th.

Dr. Keith Sterner, Pastor Nominating Committee, reported two prospective candidates are no longer candidates. One took a full-time position in Cadillac and the other declined to pursue our half-time position. There are no prospective candidates at this time.

For the two weeks Deb Montgomery will be on vacation in July, Lee Hunsberger and Sue Reglin will provide office coverage.

The next meeting is July 16, 2018 at 7:00 PM.
