Who We Are

About First Presbyterian Church of Ionia

We are ordinary people grateful to God for the love that he has shown us in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, whom we proclaim as Lord of all. In him God has made us his own people, and adopted us into his own family. By his Spirit God has formed us into genuine community, where we learn to speak as well as listen, to give as well as receive. By Word and sacrament, the means of grace, God builds up our community and empowers us to be a witness to his kindness and compassion in the world.

First Presbyterian Church is a creedal and confessional church. That is to say, what we believe is embodied in the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds as well as in the catechisms and confessions adopted by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). We believe these historic sources are reliable guides to our understanding of what the Bible teaches about Christian faith and life.

First Presbyterian Church is a church that loves its liturgy! We believe that worshipping God together shapes us as members of Christ’s own body, uniting us closer and closer to him as well as to one another in one Spirit. That is why we stress robust biblical preaching and the faithful observance of the sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper, the second of which we celebrate on the first Sunday of each calendar month. The themes of our worship are drawn from the festivals and seasons of the Christian year (e.g. Christmas, Easter), in which we celebrate the significant events in salvation history. These culminate in the life, mission, death, resurrection and exaltation of Jesus Christ. For our worship planning we rely on the Revised Common Lectionary, a three-year cycle of weekly biblical readings used by churches of various denominations and confessional traditions.

We encourage you to join us! Our sincere hope is to give to each a sense of home, where persons find their deepest value in the love of God revealed to us in Jesus Christ.
